How do I volunteer? Although volunteering has always been important to National Parks, it has become much more so in recent years as Government funding to the parks has been drastically cut. Our group has been providing a regular monthly working party of volunteers for several years now, working in the coastal area under the supervision of former senior ranger Bernie McLinden, who is now in charge of bringing the Coast to Coast route within the National Park up to National Trail standard. Bernie's job has now fallen to Beth Ghest, the new NYMNP ranger for the North-Eastern section of the park. At group level the group is organised at the moment by Phil Trafford The sessions are always enjoyable and rewarding for all concerned. If you want to join us the first step is to register as a volunteer with the National Park by emailing volunteers@northyorkmoors.org.uk and requesting to be registered as a volunteer as you are a member of The Ramblers Scarborough group and would like to be able to help on tasks with "The Scarborough Ramblers North Team" led by ranger Bethany Ghest. You should receive confirmation of your acceptance and a log in password for "My Volunteer", so that you can sign up for tasks and record your hours. Please let me know when you have done this ( philip.trafford@talktalk.net )so I can add you to our volunteer mail list. You will not be committing to attend every month. The dates planned are listed in walks/events and you can join in as often or as little as you are able. We’ve tackled a variety of jobs; lots of cutting back of brambles, bracken and overhanging branches, repairing and replacing stiles, building boardwalks, adding none-slip surface to bridges, to name but a few. Whatever job we do, it’s great to put something back into the Park, which gives us so much enjoyment. Beth intends to organise working parties for our group on the third Wednesday of each month. She will post details of the task before hand on the "My Volunteer" website, where you can sign on to state your intention of joining the task. She would like us to post our hours onto the site after each event. You can also use the My Volunteer site to claim travel expenses from the park. How to use the My Volunteer site; PHIL TRAFFORD .
