It has been proposed that the Group run a
Basic Navigation course to encourage members to plan and
lead walks. It's mainly for the benefit of those who
feel they would like to, but lack that bit of knowledge
and confidence to get them started, or maybe you would
just like to brush up on your navigation skills. Well,
help is at hand! The Course will be held at St Hildas
Church, Ravenscar between the hours of 10 and 4 on
Saturday the 25th of April. I will organise the Basic
Navigation classroom work, with help from Margie. Bring
your own packed lunch. Tea and coffee will be provided
as there is a full working kitchen there. Practical
application of the course work will be conducted on the
moor near the Radio Mast by other members of the
committee, depending on time and weather of course.
There is a class room with overhead projector and plenty
of plug points, a nice easel for flip charts and plenty
of room to spread maps out so is an ideal location.
THE COURSE
How to orientate the map to the ground and features
around.
How to make, read and apply Grid Refs. What the letters
in front represent.
How to use a "Roamer" to find your position.
How to take compass bearings from a map and apply them
in the field.
How to read contour lines to understand the lie of the
land.
How to assess time and distance.
How to plan and measure a route.
How to Identify attack points and handrails.
Understanding the different symbols used for identifying
RoW and Access Areas.
If there is something specific you want to learn about
please let me know.
It's important that we have some idea of how many
members are interested and will attend. Could you please
contact me if you would like to attend as we will have
work sheets to produce and printing costs. It doesn't
mean you have to lead walks but we are looking for more
walk leaders, as some of us are getting old!
Thanks, LES M ATKINSON.
