My next walk is from Cawthorn Camps CP north of Pickering; I have revamped this one slightly from the previous offering and am generally pleased with it. It is just over 10 miles and has only one proper climb, which is quite long but gradual. Not too sure how I managed that, but never mind. It begins with a visit to the Roman Camps site, which offers a delightful panorama of the moors and we descend in stages after that into Newtondale. It's a nice circular walk with plenty of scenic views to enjoy, particularly from the climb towards Newton on Rawcliffe. For anyone unfamiliar with the start point, the route via Swainsea Lane, Pickering is probably the most direct. These are directions coming from Scarborough. Turn right at the central lights in Pickering signed NYM Railway, then sharp left onto Bridge St, follow round onto Middleton Rd and look for the right turn onto Swainsea Lane after the junior school. Beware, much of Swainsea Lane is single track road! At the T junction, turn left, signed Cropton. An alternative is to proceed through Pickering, turn off at the Rosedale/Cropton sign, go to Cropton, carry on through the village and follow the Newton on Rawcliffe road. From either direction, the camps CP is indicated by a wooden signpost.
