April 28. Working Party at Golden Grove |
|
The first working party of 2021 finally took place, although it was still governed by "the rule of six", meaning that only five of our group members together with ranger Berne McLinden could be involved. The task was at Golden Grove near Whitby at a site just downstream on the beck from Waterfall Cottage. A gravel bed at this point is a spawning site for salmon and is also visited by otters, presumably feeding on the salmon. The area was fenced off, but in recent years, the fence has broken down and children have been playing down by the water and in the river. We built a new fence, which will have notices on it warning visitors of the importance of the enclosed area to wildlife. We also cleared overhead tree growth and cut back brambles etc on the footpaths on either side of the river. |

Our day was made very enjoyable by the hospitality of the residents of Waterfall Cottage who kept us plied with drinks and a selection of food.
